Activity TWO: Winter 2004-WHERE ARE YOU?!? If you live in the north, you are likely experiencing winter. If you live south, such as Australia, you are experiencing SUMMER! Find the exact opposite location on a globe, from where you live. Read and write about what is going on in that region. Write a 500 word or less essay including FACTS on the location (quote source), something you already knew (if applicable) and something new, that you did NOT know. Finalize your submission with any other idea, you wish to share about winter/summer and how it relates to your piece. Submit by March 1 (or when completed). If we receive 200 or more entries, we will offer a prize award to participants having a PayPal account. Be sure to include where you live, your age and any unique feature about YOU! We will post the top 3 winners this spring. Please only submit one per person. There are other activities, for which you can participate and have opportunities for prizes! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! If you note on your submission that you recommended the contest to at least 2 other people (and we see their submission) we will add 5 points to your score! GOOD LUCK and enjoy the WINTER/SUMMER SEASON!!
Light for life
Fall Activity: Green plants need light from sun to make their food. All
living things feed on plants or animals that have eaten plants.
Cats' eyes seem
to glow in the dark. This is because they have an extra
reflective layer at the back of their eyes, behind the retina. At
night, when only a small amount of light enters a cat's eyes, the
light is reflected back through the retina again. This helps to
produce a clear image. Many mammals have this special layer in
their eyes. It is called a tapetum.
Some animals can produce light. Firefly beetles attract their
mate with flashes of light. Different kinds of firefly signals with
different patterns of flashes, which help each individual to
recognize others of its own kind. MORRIS CODE! Who said bugs were
dumb!?!?!
Some animals use light and color to help them hide from their
enemies. This is called camouflage.
Can
you identify 10 insects, reptiles or other animals that blend in
so well to their environment that they are hardly detectable?
If you can, send your answers to learn@anchorsciencefun.com
with LIGHT Answers in the subject of the email. HAPPY exploring!
Deadline for this activity is August 31 (or when completed). The 1st week of September
our fall activities will be posted. Check back often for
contests, activities and way to help Anchors and other nonprofit
organizations out!
